Practical rain protection and equipment securing methods for camera gear
22 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Cling wrap and adhesive plastic sheeting can be shaped to fit any camera configuration and adhere cleanly to surfaces while remaining semi-transparent.
- A zip-lock bag paired with adhesive plastic sheeting provides effective protection for monitor screens.
- Custom-fitted covers for battery cages made from plastic sheeting speed up battery changes compared to using generic cling wrap.
- Plastic sheeting placed between camera and camera plate and draped around the junction box acts as a water barrier for that area.
- Velcro strips installed on both the camera and camera base plate prevent camera plate rotation, with just a single camera screw needed for security.
- Anti-skid rubber material applied to camera plates significantly reduces slipping, though grit-textured varieties are unsuitable as they scratch surfaces.
Depends on
- The anti-skid rubber material recommendation notes that grit-textured versions behave like sandpaper and are not suitable for this application.
- Availability of the recommended 3M anti-skid material varies by location.
- No systematic testing or durability data provided for any of these solutions.
- All solutions appear to be based on individual user experience rather than manufacturer recommendations.
