Using Omnishot external battery system with Preston HU1 follow focus unit
14 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The Omnishot battery system can be used with an HU1 since the battery mounting interface is identical to the HU2
- The HU1 draws more power than the HU2 and requires more surge current at startup, which can cause low-light jamming if the unit is powered off and back on during operation
- FM70 batteries provide more reliable performance with an HU1 than FM50 batteries when using an Omnishot
- Keeping the HU1 powered on continuously rather than cycling it off and on prevents the low-light jamming issue
- Even with limitations, the Omnishot remains the most cost-effective battery solution for HU1 users
Depends on
- Experience reported is specific to one operator's HU1, which may have had individual low-voltage circuit issues
- The workaround requires discipline to prevent focus pullers from turning off the unit during shooting days
- Some focus pullers prefer turning off the unit due to power concerns, which conflicts with the recommended continuous power approach
