Mounting a Canatrans wireless video transmitter on a camera recorder mount instead of at the top of the camera rig

18 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • The Canatrans base plate can be removed to expose existing threads, allowing the unit to be mounted directly to a PRO recorder mount plate with drilled holes for screw clearance
  • A 6-inch video and power cable from Lentequip can connect the transmitter mounted on the recorder to the camera
  • Mounting the transmitter lower on the recorder mount reduces weight above the gimbal but may compromise signal reception compared to higher placement
  • The Canatrans broadcasts an analog UHF signal while the MDR uses a digital signal, so no interference occurs between the two systems
  • A vertically oriented transmitter antenna emits a donut-shaped signal on a horizontal plane, and obstacles like crew members or equipment in that plane degrade reception
  • Higher transmitter placement improves reception quality because the horizontal transmission plane remains less obstructed by people and on-set objects
  • The receiver antenna also needs to be vertical and oriented at the same pitch as the transmitter antenna for optimal signal reception

Depends on

  • The mounting method was developed for the Canatrans and may not apply to other transmitter models
  • The antenna orientation principles described assume a 100 percent vertical antenna position
  • One contributor did not experience interference between Canatrans and either Scorpio or Preston MDR systems, but this does not guarantee no interference in all setups
