Upgrading from Steadicam Mini to newer stabilizer rig
14 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The Steadicam Mini arm is considered limiting for modern work and newer rigs offer significant improvements.
- The Mini was succeeded by the original Flyer, then the Flyer LE, followed by the Scout and Zephyr models.
- The Mini's sled design was similar to the original Flyer sled but used a different gimbal clamp and handle.
- A used first-generation Flyer can be found for around $4000 and represents a major upgrade suitable for DSLR work.
- Some Mini parts including vest components and dovetail plates are compatible with the Flyer and can serve as backups.
- The Flyer LE and Scout offer higher payload capacity at 20 pounds and include newer features like carbon fiber extendable posts.
- The Zephyr provides a 25-pound payload capacity, an improved bottom spar, and HD upgrade compatibility.
- The Pilot model costs less than other options but has more limited payload and represents a step backward in vest design.
- A Steadicam Mini struggled to handle a Sony F3 with Arri 16mm ultra prime lens and external focusing unit when operating at capacity.
- The Zephyr becomes necessary when planning to use heavier cameras such as Scarlet or Sony F3 alongside accessories like wireless video transmission and remote focus systems.
Depends on
- The comparison is specific to Steadicam brand rigs from the early 2000s onwards.
- The Mini's limitations may have been acceptable for older camera formats but become apparent with modern cinema cameras.
- Pricing information is from 2012 and may not reflect current market values.
- Specific payload details are only provided for some models, with Mini limitations referenced but not numerically specified.
