Wireless follow focus system selection and compatibility with Steadicam Zephyr
15 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The Hocus Focus system works with Steadicam Zephyr but has a motor too weak for large cinema lenses.
- Hocus Focus motors are not compatible with other manufacturers' motors.
- Industry-standard wireless focus systems are Bartech Focus Device and Preston systems.
- Bartech systems are known for being rugged and reliable at lower cost compared to Preston.
- Preston systems offer multi-channel control for focus, zoom, and iris functions.
- Used analog Bartech systems with analog motors represent the cheapest option for cinema lens compatibility.
- Used digital Bartech systems are the next price tier above analog models.
- A power cable from the Steadicam sled is needed to power the receiver unit.
- Start-stop cables are convenient but not mandatory for operation.
- A rod system or 15mm rod bracket is required to mount the focus motor on the camera.
Depends on
- Hocus Focus Pro was announced as new and unproven at the time of discussion.
- Compatibility between wireless focus systems and camera types varies by lens size and type.
- Multiple system options exist but most alternatives to the major brands should be avoided.
- Exact compatibility details between specific focus systems and Steadicam Zephyr power connections need verification.
