Chest strap ratchet buckle discomfort in certain camera support vests
15 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Several operators with various body types report that ratchet buckles on chest straps in certain vest models dig into the ribs because the padding does not extend far enough forward to keep the buckle lifted away from the body.
- Lengthening velcro straps to position the ratchet buckle forward of the padding may help flatten the pull angle and reduce pressure on the chest.
- Adding extra spar pads under the chest straps by tucking velcro tabs between existing pads and the plastic shell can eliminate pressure points caused by buckles.
- Older vest models such as the original Ultra vest did not produce this pressure point issue for some users, suggesting design changes in newer models may have introduced the problem.
- Modifying or bending metal components and padding in vests can help customize fit, though this may require trial and adjustment.
- Vest fit is highly individual and can improve significantly with break-in time or custom foam modifications.
Depends on
- The problem appears specific to certain body types and may not occur for all users.
- Users had varying experiences with different vest models, suggesting fit issues are not universal across all individuals or builds.
- Custom modifications like adding extra pads may not be a perfect solution and may require further refinement.
- Warranty coverage for modifications made by users is unclear.
