Beginner steadicam rig setup recommendations and component selection for the Flyer LE system
17 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- V-Mount or Anton Bauer batteries are recommended for powering steadicam rigs, with V-Mount being convertible to Anton Bauer via a small adapter plate
- The Flyer LE system includes a standard definition monitor rather than an HD-SDI monitor, which is adequate for most work though some HD cameras like the RED require a downconverter for compatibility
- Purchasing duplicate and triplicate small components such as cables, adapters, screws, and locating pins helps prevent loss or damage during operation
- Weight capacity is a significant limitation of the Flyer LE, with most RED One configurations exceeding the rig's maximum payload capability
- Monitor brightness measured in nits is more critical than pixel count for steadicam work, especially when operating in bright daylight conditions
- Wireless follow focus controls and wireless video monitoring are commonly needed accessories for professional steadicam operation
- RED camera power should be sourced from the steadicam sled itself rather than relying on the camera's internal battery to maximize operational flexibility and accessory options
- Used steadicam rigs in larger weight classes may offer better capability for the cost compared to entry-level new systems
- Weight plates can be used to allow smaller cameras to operate on steadicam rigs designed for heavier payloads
Depends on
- Discussion occurred in 2009 and equipment mentioned may be obsolete or superseded
- Weight limitations of Flyer LE are particularly problematic for RED One camera work
- One participant expressed frustration with outgrowing the Flyer LE rig early in their operation
- Compatibility between different battery mount types and power requirements requires additional adapters and custom cables
