Repairing stripped lanyard attachment thread on follow focus hand unit
12 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The lanyard keeper is retained by a nut with a nylon locking insert on the back of the hand unit
- A stripped thread can be repaired by opening the unit, removing the backing nut, and reinstalling it with a nylon locking nut to prevent it from backing out again
- Alternatively, epoxy or thread-locking compound can be applied when reinstalling the nut for permanent retention
- A rivnut installation is another option for a more durable repair
- As a temporary workaround, a quarter-inch eyebolt can be attached to the back of the unit where the microforce screws on
Depends on
- This repair requires opening the hand unit
- The exact model year may affect whether the original design included a threaded eyebolt versus a nut-retained system
- The thread-locking or epoxy approach makes the eyebolt permanent
