Converting SDI or HDMI video signals to FireWire format for legacy DV recorders
13 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- FireWire connections on older DV and HDV recorders expect a native DV signal over the FireWire port, not standard video signals like SDI or HDMI
- Converting SDI or HDMI directly to a true DV signal suitable for FireWire input is not straightforward and no simple cable solution exists
- One potential workaround involves using a miniDV camera that accepts external video input and then outputting its DV signal via FireWire to a compatible recorder
- Using a separate hardware recorder with native HDMI or SDI inputs may be more practical than attempting complex signal conversions for steadicam applications
- Some recorders support a rec trigger function that allows the camera to automatically start recording on the external recorder simultaneously, though compatibility varies by camera model
Depends on
- The FireWire bandwidth may be insufficient for full-quality SDI signals
- The rec trigger compatibility only works with specific camera models such as Red and Sony cameras, not with Alexa or Canon C300 cameras
- Solutions discussed assume older DV/HDV format recorders; modern alternatives with direct digital inputs are recommended
- This discussion does not address whether custom hardware conversion solutions exist beyond commercially available products
