Selecting sync sound film cameras for steadicam operation
22 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The Arri 35-BL3 model is preferred among the BL series for steadicam work when balancing sound quality, weight, and handling characteristics
- BL1 and BL2 models tend to produce audible camera noise that recording engineers find problematic
- BL4 and BL4s models fly well but impose significant physical strain on the operator and are generally avoided when possible
- The Arri 535B is widely preferred over BL models but commands substantially higher rental costs
- Moviecam Compact is one of the quietest sync sound options and flies smoothly, weighing only about one pound less than a 535B in steadicam configuration
- Moviecam SL is very lightweight and easy on the operator's body but produces noticeable camera noise in quiet interior scenes and is vulnerable to wind disturbance
- The Millennium XL offers good weight-to-performance balance and quiet operation but rental costs are very high and availability is typically limited to high-budget productions
- Arricam ST produces acceptable results in steadicam mode at approximately half a pound lighter than Moviecam Compact but has mounting limitations that create back-heavy balance problems
- Arricam LT is reported by other operators to fly well with appropriate weight characteristics, though the reporter had not personally tested it
- Magazine compatibility issues between Arricam ST and LT models create balancing difficulties when using heavier ST magazines on an ST body
Depends on
- The discussion reflects North American steadicam operator practices and may not represent preferences in other regions
- Personal experience is limited to the reported operator's direct testing; assessments of untested cameras like Arricam LT rely on secondhand accounts
- Proposed adapter solutions from the manufacturer were described as prototypes not yet available for practical evaluation
- Sound performance assessments may vary depending on microphone placement, boom technique, and specific production requirements
