Connecting HD-SDI camera output to a consumer television for monitoring
16 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- A consumer television's coaxial tuner input accepts only broadcast signals such as ATSC, not HD-SDI video from professional cameras
- HD-SDI and ATSC are incompatible signal formats and cannot be directly converted without specialized equipment
- Professional broadcast monitoring displays with HD-SDI inputs are purpose-built for this application, whereas consumer televisions are not
- An HD-SDI to HDMI converter device such as the AJA unit enables connection of professional HD-SDI camera output to consumer television HDMI inputs
- Small portable displays with battery power and NTSC tuner capability exist as alternatives for field monitoring applications
Depends on
- This discussion occurred in 2010 and reflects equipment standards of that era
- The suggestion regarding encryption and HDMI versus HD-SDI remains debated without consensus in the thread
- No free or low-cost workaround for directly connecting HD-SDI to consumer television coaxial input was identified
