Converting an Ultra2 Steadicam rig from normal to super-high mode using a telescoping post

What the thread found

  • A 4-stage telescoping post can extend an Ultra2 rig to achieve lens heights around 2.25 meters, taking approximately 1 minute 45 seconds to convert from normal to super-high mode, or about 2 minutes if integral tilting stage adjustment is included.
  • The conversion procedure involves fully extending the telescoping posts below the gimbal for maximum counterbalance, then extending the post above the gimbal until achieving neutral balance, followed by shortening it to create a slightly bottom-heavy balance.
  • Static balance is checked and corrected using the motorized stage, followed by a drop test.
  • Adding a third battery or dummy weight at the sled bottom would allow raising the camera an additional 15-20 centimeters using the full extent of the built-in super-post.
  • In super-high mode with a long sled, a drop time of 4+ seconds is appropriate due to increased inertia on the tilt and roll axes, whereas 3 seconds would create excessive bottom-heavy balance.

Depends on

  • The rig was not in full dynamic balance during the demonstration.
  • The specific camera setup used was a loaded magazine 435 with a 35mm Zeiss super speed MKIII lens and Arri clip-on matte-box, which may not represent all configurations.
  • Participants disagreed about whether the rig achieved proper dynamic balance in normal or extended mode, leaving this aspect unresolved.
