Genesis camera with onboard recorder experiences power instability despite adequate voltage readings
18 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Genesis cameras equipped with onboard recorders in single-piece mode may fail to maintain recording despite voltage readings above 13 volts, even with three batteries configured in parallel
- Multiple operators reported identical power issues when flying Genesis cameras with Dionic and Powercube batteries while attempting to power onboard recorders
- The MK-V Nexus battery base uses 22-gauge internal wiring which is undersized for the current demand of a Genesis camera with recorder, causing significant voltage drop despite adequate voltage at the base
- Flying an external heavy-gauge power cable directly to the camera bypasses the MK-V post wiring and resolves power issues that cannot be fixed by increasing battery count or capacity
- Genesis cameras powered directly from sled-mounted batteries using Y-cables distributing load across two wires perform reliably with onboard recorders, whereas routing through MK-V internal wiring causes power dropout problems
- Overcranked framerates above 24 fps on Genesis require the onboard recorder to be active, making single-piece power solutions necessary for those situations
Depends on
- The original problem was never definitively resolved through measurement of actual amperage draw or voltage drop testing
- Some participants used Dionics batteries while others used Powercubes, so the issue may affect multiple battery types or be specific to certain configurations
- Solutions mentioned assume access to external power cable routing or direct sled power integration, which may not be available on all rigs
- One operator eventually resolved the issue by switching to flash magazine media instead of onboard recorders, suggesting the problem may be specific to recorder power requirements rather than camera power alone
