Balancing and shortening a Steadicam® rig with a heavy zoom lens (14–15 lbs).
What the thread found
- An ARRI ALEXA Mini with long camera plate and a 14 lbs zoom totals approximately 35 lbs, comparable to earlier Arricam LT builds.
- A long plate allows the camera to be repositioned far back, keeping weight distribution and height low, and fits standard stages; the Zalex Longplate-M suits mid-size Tiffen stages such as Archer 2, Zephyr, and Scout.
- A hardware kit enables rotation between camera and plate without a VCT plate intermediate.
- Mounting the wireless receiver (MDR) on the camera rather than under the lens or on the sled saves time during mode changes and keeps the sled very short.
- Heavy builds with high inertia deliver smooth, dolly-like motion; heavy anamorphic lenses (for example, 15 lbs fixed focal length) increase overall weight even with fewer motors.
- One operator noted a trend toward zoom lenses over prime lenses on Steadicam® rigs in recent practice.
