Canatrans transmitter causing radio frequency interference with Panatape focus measurement system
19 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Radio frequency interference from a Canatrans transmitter at half-watt power causes Panatape units to lose accuracy when mounted in close proximity on the camera rig, regardless of frequency channel selection
- Moving the Canatrans transmitter to the back of the magazine eliminates the interference problem with Panatape
- The interference occurs even when the Canatrans is held near the Panatape without being mechanically attached to the same mounting plate
- Panatape units are known to have poor internal shielding and grounding design compared to more modern focus measurement systems
- Multiple Panatape units on the same show exhibited the same interference pattern with the Canatrans transmitter
- Mounting the Panatape brain on the matte box with sensor tubes on the dovetail plate does not prevent interference from a nearby Canatrans transmitter
- The manufacturer suggested keeping the Canatrans transmitter as far away as possible from the Panatape as a solution
Depends on
- The interference pattern was specific to this setup and may not occur with all Panatape units
- Some crew members experienced Panatape issues independent of Canatrans proximity, suggesting equipment-specific problems
- The Panatape interface connector with Preston HU3 hand unit may not be properly wired in some units
- This was reported in 2007 using older camera systems and focus measurement technology
