HD digital level options for steadicam monitoring

DisputedParticipants disagreed and reached no conclusion. Read the findings as positions, not as an answer.

What the thread found

  • The XCS unit is the only stand-alone universal HD-SDI digital level available with the best performance characteristics.
  • Transvideo monitors have built-in level indicators.
  • SmallHD monitors include a built-in level feature, though it is less reliable than dedicated options and works best for checking lock-offs.
  • Tiffen produces a stand-alone level sensor with an external display strip that can be mounted separately from the monitor.
  • The SmallHD DP7 internal level requires the monitor to be held vertically and becomes unreliable when the monitor is laid flat.
  • Using an old SD-based XCS level with an SD signal defeats the purpose when working with HD signals.
  • A basic bubble level mounted to the monitor can be more reliable than built-in digital levels on some monitors.
  • The iPhone app Shot Assistant with a lite version offers a steadicam level function and can be mounted like a return screen.
  • The Tiffen level was experiencing software issues causing erratic behavior during panning, leading to temporary stock shortages.
  • Monitoring both the frame and a separate level indicator simultaneously requires practice and coordination.

Depends on

  • Tiffen level was out of stock with no specified restock date at time of discussion.
  • SmallHD DP7 level performance issue when monitor is not vertical was not resolved in thread.
  • Claims about Tiffen level stability conflict between participants - one user reported good performance while another reported it going haywire during fast pans.
  • iPhone app solution requires separate device and may not be integrated with primary monitor.
  • Suggestion for a thin SD-based level panel mounted to HD monitor was not confirmed as feasible or developed.
