Heden Carat follow focus system compatibility issues with Red Epic and Dragon cameras
12 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The Heden Carat follow focus system had polarity and wiring problems when connecting to Red Epic and Dragon sync ports, even with cables supplied directly by Heden.
- Cables originally specified by Heden for Epic compatibility had incorrect polarity at the Epic connection end.
- Heden-supplied Epic run cables with 00 lemo connectors sometimes had mechanical fit issues with camera sync ports due to poor connector quality.
- When Heden Epic run cables functioned mechanically, they were sometimes wired for the camera control port instead of the run port, requiring rewiring to operate correctly.
- Receiver unit replacement resolved follow focus control issues on the Heden Carat system.
- The handset component of the Heden Carat system consumes significant battery power when operating with 9V batteries.
Depends on
- The issue occurred with specific camera models (Red Epic, Red Dragon) but not with Alexa or other cameras tested.
- One user's problem persisted even after rewiring and cable replacement, and the cause remained unidentified.
- Successful configuration on one production setup did not guarantee it would work on different camera bodies or in different production environments.
