Manual focus pulling on a Steadicam rig without an assistant
20 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- A wired remote focus controller can be mounted on the gimbal or yoke handle to allow the operator to pull focus manually while operating the Steadicam alone.
- A wireless follow focus system can be controlled via a gimbal-mounted hard-wired control unit, eliminating the need for a separate assistant.
- When using LANC-controlled variable zoom focus units, the autofocus feature can be engaged selectively by the operator to maintain sharpness on predetermined distances during a shot.
- Understanding depth of field at various lighting conditions allows an operator to use autofocus efficiently by triggering it when the frame composition matches the intended focus distance.
Depends on
- The discussion does not resolve whether manually controlling a remote focus handle mounted below the gimbal affects stabilization performance.
- The feasibility of using a flexible transmission to connect a focus handle to a 35mm adapter's built-in follow focus remains untested in this thread.
- The autofocus technique described works best when the operator can predict focus distances in advance, which may not be reliable in documentary work with unpredictable subjects.
- The thread reflects practices from 2006 with older camera models and focus control technology.
