Panasonic HD 9-inch LCD monitor evaluation for film and video use

22 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

Note (as of October 2026)Curt O. Schaller, the developer of Artemis and Trinity, has no longer been with ARRI since the end of 2025. To our knowledge, ARRI currently has no dedicated team and no official contact persons for its stabilizer systems. In our view, the future of this line is uncertain. If you are buying new, get written confirmation from ARRI beforehand on how long service and spare parts are guaranteed. Have used rigs checked by the manufacturer before you buy.

What the thread found

  • The Panasonic HD monitor offers 16:9 format capability and was designed specifically for use with the Varicam camera.
  • The monitor features an SDI input with no discernible image delay and includes RGB and SD input options.
  • The control panel is detachable and can mount to the top, bottom, or either side of the unit, or be velcroed in other locations.
  • A waveform display is built into the monitor for exposure monitoring purposes.
  • The monitor provides excellent side-to-side viewing angles without image degradation.
  • Brightness is approximately 400 nits, which is insufficient for outdoor daylight use.
  • The monitor lacks support for anamorphic formats, limiting its applicability for film production.
  • The price point was significantly lower than comparable competing monitors at the time.
  • Mounting options include provision for mounting an Anton Bauer power brick on the back.
  • The monitor lacks incremental zoom adjustment and image rotation or flip functions.

Depends on

  • Testing was conducted in 2004 on prototype and early production units.
  • Outdoor performance assessment showed poor visibility in daylight conditions with significant glare on the screen surface.
  • Anamorphic format support was missing at the time of these evaluations.
  • The Steadicam market was not a design consideration during development according to the manufacturer.
