Standard workflow for focus and exposure checks when operating Steadicam on professional productions

16 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • On film-style shoots, the camera operator should expect to frame up multiple times so the AC can set focus marks with a tape measure and the DP can verify exposure, rather than having the operator hold the rig while they repeatedly check instruments
  • An AC pulling focus on the fly during Steadicam work requires substantial skill and experience, often from film camera background
  • A DP should use a light meter or similar metering tool to establish base exposure rather than relying on the operator to repeatedly dock and undock the rig while they adjust settings by eye
  • Using a rolling stand with pneumatic wheels allows the AC and DP to examine the rig without the operator bearing the physical load
  • Powering a RED camera from the Steadicam sled via cable reduces the weight carried by the operator over a full day of shooting
  • Using CompactFlash cards instead of the internal drive on RED cameras can reduce dropout issues during data-intensive shoots
  • Low rates for Steadicam work create industry-wide pressure that undercuts professional standards and working conditions

Depends on

  • The discussion centers on RED cameras and may not apply equally to other digital formats
  • Experiences were primarily from reality television and low-budget commercial work, which may differ from higher-budget film productions
  • Some participants describe observing poor AC and DP practices, which may not represent standard professional workflow
  • The discussion touches on industry economics and rate pressure but does not resolve the tension between affordability and professional standards
