Converting a Universal Model 1 Steadicam to low mode operation

15 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • The Model 1 can be converted to low mode by unclamps the center post and front support, then inverting the base to keep it right side up.
  • An alternative low mode approach involves inverting the entire sled and using a small mirror taped to the equipment to reflect the image upward to the operator's view.
  • The mirror method requires scan reversing switches to be installed to correct the image orientation in the monitor.
  • Some Model 1 units were modified with an adapter allowing the monitor to be mounted at an angle to the front post for low mode visibility.
  • Adding an external LCD monitor on an adjustable arm improves low mode visibility compared to built-in monitor solutions.
  • The Model 1 was designed to be front-heavy, so adding an external monitor requires adding compensating weight to the back end to maintain proper balance.
  • A lightweight seven-inch LCD monitor can be mounted on a magic arm, though this will throw the sled out of dynamic balance requiring back-end weight compensation.

Depends on

  • The front-heavy design of the Model 1 means any monitor modifications will require rebalancing.
  • View angles with inverted mounting solutions can be problematic when the sled is boomed up while shooting downward.
  • No complete set of original Model 1 low mode conversion instructions appears to have been readily available.
  • The conversation references modifications performed by specific individuals but lacks complete technical specifications for implementing them.
  • One participant describes personal difficulties using these solutions, including awkward viewing angles requiring neck strain.
