Suitability of Sony LMD-9020 and LMD-9030 monitors for Steadicam use

19 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

Note (as of October 2026)Curt O. Schaller, the developer of Artemis and Trinity, has no longer been with ARRI since the end of 2025. To our knowledge, ARRI currently has no dedicated team and no official contact persons for its stabilizer systems. In our view, the future of this line is uncertain. If you are buying new, get written confirmation from ARRI beforehand on how long service and spare parts are guaranteed. Have used rigs checked by the manufacturer before you buy.

What the thread found

  • The Sony LMD-9020 weighs approximately 2.8 kilograms and offers an 8.4-inch color screen as a potential alternative to the TB-6 monitor, though with lower brightness and lower cost.
  • The Sony LMD-9030 model includes an SDI input option at higher price point.
  • LCD monitors generally perform better in outdoor conditions than traditional monitors, but may still face visibility challenges in direct sunlight depending on screen quality.
  • Monitor size and weight considerations are factors when selecting equipment for Steadicam rigs, as excessive bulk can affect rig balance and operator mobility.

Depends on

  • Limited hands-on experience reported by participants with the specific models discussed.
  • The comparison was incomplete as participants did not reach consensus on whether these monitors were practical for Steadicam work.
  • One user mentioned the Sony 9050 model seemed too large for Steadicam use but did not provide detailed performance data.
  • Performance in direct sunlight remains partially unresolved as an ongoing challenge for LCD monitors.
