Upgrading monitors on a Steadicam Pilot rig with considerations for weight, brightness, and leveling
17 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The Steadicam Pilot monitor mounting uses standard 1/4 inch by 20 threads, allowing attachment of aftermarket monitors.
- Upgraded monitors with electronic levels and improved brightness can cost significantly more than the original rig and may exceed the weight capacity of lightweight rigs like the Pilot.
- The stock 5.8 inch widescreen monitor on the Pilot has visibility issues in sunlight and produces a grainy, distorted image that becomes difficult to see outdoors.
- Small bubble levels from DIY stores can be attached to monitor brackets or tape-mounted to the top of monitors for horizon reference.
- A homemade monitor shade using black coroplast and velcro attachment is an effective and affordable solution for improving sunlight visibility.
- Adding a secondary on-camera monitor can provide a backup viewing option when the main monitor becomes invisible in bright sunlight, though this compromises operational posture and requires activating both monitors in the camera menu.
- Attempting to create a large DIY shade for the main monitor often results in a structure that functions like a sail and cannot be packed away practically.
Depends on
- The weight limit for the Pilot rig is approximately 10 pounds, which constrains upgrade options.
- Commercially available aftermarket monitors with advanced features are expensive, with digital levels and frameline generators starting around 749 GBP and transreflective displays around 2000 dollars base price.
- Specific techniques for DIY shades that work well are not comprehensively documented; some users reported DIY shade attempts failed to be practical.
- The information is from 2009 and may not reflect current monitor options.
