Mounting and powering a Red camera on a Steadicam Flyer
16 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The Red camera requires 12 volts and draws approximately 80 watts, making it feasible to power from a Flyer onboard battery system though runtime is limited depending on battery type and capacity.
- Red Brick batteries mounted on the sled plate provide a more practical power solution than relying solely on Flyer onboard batteries, which may only provide 30 minutes of runtime per battery when powering the camera.
- A custom power cable with a 3-pin XLR Lemo connector can connect Flyer power output to the Red camera, though standard Flyer power cables (4-pin XLR) may also work directly.
- Video output from the Red requires an HDSDI BNC connector from the camera's video breakout box, then routed through a downconverter like the Decimator to display on an onboard monitor.
- Achieving the weight capacity on a standard Flyer requires stripping the Red to essentials: body, prime lens, video breakout device, downconverter, clip-on matte box, and CF card recording, totaling approximately 17-19 pounds.
- Operating significantly over the official weight limit of 15 pounds for a Flyer or 19 pounds for a Flyer LE increases risk of gimbal strain and potential system damage over time.
- Powering multiple accessories like downconverters and follow focus systems from a single Flyer power output creates demand for additional power distribution solutions or custom cables.
- Wireless lens control systems are lighter alternatives to mechanical focus follow systems when mounting a Red on a Flyer.
Depends on
- Runtime estimates for onboard batteries are anecdotal and vary based on specific battery models and what other equipment draws power.
- Weight tolerance discussions reflect operator experience and preference rather than manufacturer specifications; experiences with exceeding limits without immediate failure do not guarantee safety.
- Specific power connector configurations may differ between Flyer and Flyer LE models, requiring verification before attempting connections.
- The Red camera's heat vents are located on the bottom, which could create thermal considerations when mounting additional recording devices or storage directly to the rig.
- Recording solutions such as external raid drives require secure mounting and add weight, which may approach or exceed safe operating limits.
