Camera slippage on Steadicam Merlin dovetail plate
19 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- A camera can shift sideways on a Steadicam Merlin dovetail plate even when the mounting screw is tight, requiring repeated re-tightening during use.
- Applying gaffer tape between the camera and dovetail plate creates friction that reduces sideways movement.
- Thin rubber pieces such as bicycle repair kit materials can also provide additional friction to minimize camera shifting.
- A locating screw on the dovetail plate helps but may not completely prevent sideways movement if the camera mounting hole is oversized.
- Adding a thin lock washer to the mounting screw and locating pin can improve stability of the camera on the plate.
Depends on
- The gaffer tape solution is temporary and requires periodic reapplication.
- Camera-specific factors like oversized mounting holes may affect how well friction-based solutions work.
- The lock washer approach was described as effective by one user but not confirmed by others.
- Discussion references DVX camera models but solutions may vary across different camera types.
