Comparison of Artemis Maxima and Movi gimbals for camera stabilization

Note (as of October 2026)Curt O. Schaller, the developer of Artemis and Trinity, has no longer been with ARRI since the end of 2025. To our knowledge, ARRI currently has no dedicated team and no official contact persons for its stabilizer systems. In our view, the future of this line is uncertain. If you are buying new, get written confirmation from ARRI beforehand on how long service and spare parts are guaranteed. Have used rigs checked by the manufacturer before you buy.

What the thread found

  • The Maxima is too heavy for handheld operation over extended periods and is better suited to mounted applications like vehicle-to-vehicle shots, aerial work, or boat-based filming.
  • The Maxima features robust motors and a solid construction without the remote control flexibility issues present in the Movi system.
  • Mounting the Maxima on a steadicam arm requires joystick control of the tilt axis, which produces less smooth results than traditional steadicam operation.
  • The Maxima works well as a remote stabilization head for camera movements that do not require an operator to move with the camera.
  • The Trinity gimbal is better suited than the Maxima for hybrid steadicam and gimbal applications because it keeps mass lower by removing the top stage.
  • The Maxima performs well when mounted on sandbags or on an EZrig with a Serene arm for stable, positioned shots.

Depends on

  • Discussion based on limited hands-on experience with the Maxima rather than extensive production use.
  • The comparison focuses on mid-2010s technology and product iterations.
  • Weight and handheld viability assessments are subjective and dependent on individual strength and camera package size.
  • No technical specifications or measured performance data provided.
