Running FireWire and video cables down a camera sled center post
19 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The Flyer sled's center post has an internal diameter of only 11mm, which is too narrow to accommodate standard FireWire connectors (6-pin or 4-pin).
- Routing cables externally along the front of the sled from the camera to the monitor works effectively when kept taut and dressed properly, avoiding interference with gimbal movement.
- External cables wrapped around the center post cause binding and interference during panning because they must remain loose to avoid contact with the gimbal mechanism.
- If internal cable routing is attempted on a Flyer, the existing connector block at the bottom of the post takes up most of the internal space and would need to be removed and rewired.
- Mounting external FireWire cables straight down the front of the sled (rather than wrapped around the post) and securing them with tape or velcro prevents balance problems during operation.
- The Flyer sled supports a maximum payload of 15 pounds for camera equipment.
- The Flyer includes a built-in 7-inch 16x9 monitor and can power cameras via its own battery with appropriate connectors.
Depends on
- Disassembling a Flyer sled to modify internal cabling voids the warranty and risks expensive damage.
- Any internal cable modification would render the sled non-standard and difficult to resell.
- Running cables externally affects spin balancing, requiring balance adjustments to be done before cables are reattached.
- The post is too narrow to fit standard FireWire connectors; only the thinnest cables without factory connectors might fit if connectors were installed afterward.
