Balancing a heavily front-loaded camera rig on a Steadicam by repositioning the dovetail plate
22 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- When a camera setup is front-heavy due to lens, motor, and accessories, sliding the dovetail plate backward on the camera mounting bracket allows the Steadicam plate to extend further forward underneath the lens, shifting the overall balance point rearward.
- The camera center of gravity should be located approximately 0.75 inches behind the centerline of the gimbal post for rough dynamic balance.
- A longer dovetail plate provides more adjustment range for balancing heavily front-loaded camera configurations.
- The dovetail plate mounting holes on the camera bracket should be utilized to reposition the plate rather than keeping it in a fixed position.
- Flexible dovetail plates can cause image vibration when extended far forward of the camera mounting point, while rigid plates like the XCS eliminate this issue.
- Adding dead weight to the sled bottom can be necessary when camera front-loading prevents achieving proper drop time, but adjusting plate position should be the primary solution.
Depends on
- Applies to setups with adjustable camera mounting brackets that have multiple holes for dovetail attachment.
- Some camera plates may have limited hole patterns that restrict repositioning flexibility.
- Dovetail plate flex becomes problematic primarily when the plate extends significantly beyond the camera bracket.
- The user had not attended a formal Steadicam workshop and relied on incomplete understanding of balance principles.
- Specific balance requirements may vary depending on the particular gimbal post length and sled configuration being used.
