Gimbal and post clamps on Zephyr sled becoming stiff and losing clamping force

13 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • Clamps that are difficult to close while also failing to grip securely indicate a bolt tension problem that requires adjustment or replacement rather than accepting the condition as normal.
  • Applying threadlocker compound (Loctite 222, low strength purple variety) to the clamp adjustment bolt and allowing it to cure in the correct position prevents the bolt from loosening itself during use.
  • Sweat and body oils accumulating on posts and clamp surfaces reduce friction and grip; cleaning these areas with denatured alcohol improves clamping performance.
  • A delrin washer and spring inside the clamp assembly can lose effectiveness; applying teflon lubricant to the rotating captive nut portion of the clamp handle restores proper clamping force and ease of operation.
  • Heavy camera payloads (23.7 pounds or more) expose inadequate bolt design, causing flex or bending under clamping force; manufacturers may provide upgraded replacement clamps for affected units.
  • The optimal clamp adjustment exists at a balance point where sufficient clamping force is achieved without making the lever lever prohibitively difficult to operate; test by suspending the rig and applying body weight to the gimbal.

Depends on

  • Discussions reference Zephyr-specific clamp designs that may differ from other sled models.
  • The exact specifications of replacement bolts and washers were not detailed; hardware store alternatives may not match original parts.
  • Some posts date from 2013 and do not reflect current manufacturing; manufacturer may have already addressed design issues in newer production.
