Steadicam Merlin wobble compared to Pilot and stability physics
15 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Stability in a Steadicam rig depends on inertia, calculated as mass multiplied by the square of the distance from the gimbal, meaning that doubling both the sled mass and the distance from gimbal increases stability by a factor of sixteen.
- The Pilot rig typically has approximately twice the mass and twice the distance from gimbal compared to the Merlin, making it substantially more stable against side-to-side wobble.
- Using a camera close to the specified weight limit of a rig rather than significantly below it improves stability.
- When operating a lightweight camera on a Merlin, adding mass and increasing the distance of that mass from the gimbal can theoretically improve stability.
- The Canon 5D Mark II with either a 24mm f/1.4 or 24-70mm f/2.8 lens is within acceptable weight range for the Merlin, though the prime lens is preferable to avoid mechanical jitter from zoom mechanisms.
- Steadicam Merlin and Pilot arm and vest assemblies are largely compatible, though the Merlin arm post is longer and angles to 45 degrees differently than the Pilot equivalent.
- Operator technique is a significant factor in wobble reduction independent of equipment specifications.

- The inertia principle explanation was not independently verified in the thread.
- Practical advice against using the no-vest Merlin configuration due to operator fatigue.
- The Pilot sled availability and upgrade path may have changed since the 2011 discussion date.
