Docking bracket length and dynamic balancing technique for Glidecam X-22 gimbal

12 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

DisputedParticipants disagreed and reached no conclusion. Read the findings as positions, not as an answer.

What the thread found

  • A standard docking bracket supplied with the Glidecam X-22 can be too short to allow convenient dynamic balancing without putting the camera rig on, as the setup will contact a C-stand.
  • Using a longer quality docking bracket from another manufacturer is safe for balancing purposes.
  • The Glidecam Gold Series balance bracket is an alternative option.
  • Dynamic balancing on a Glidecam X-22 can be tested by rotating the rig 90 degrees and dropping it to observe if it favors one side, then adjusting sled mass to compensate.
  • Dynamic balancing by the 90-degree drop method works best when the monitor and batteries have their centers of gravity on the same horizontal plane and directly above the post.
  • For non-coplanar rigs where monitor and battery centers of gravity are at different heights, achieving dynamic balance using only the 90-degree drop technique is limited.
  • The camera center of gravity should ideally be positioned close to the center of the main post, with monitor and battery placement used to fine-tune compensation.
  • Spin balancing the rig by hand using the traditional method remains an alternative approach to dynamic balancing.

Depends on

  • The 90-degree drop balancing method's effectiveness depends on rig geometry and whether components are coplanar.
  • The discussion left unresolved whether camera center of gravity placement is critical or whether it can be compensated by battery and monitor positioning.
  • Users were advised to verify bracket compatibility directly with Glidecam before purchasing alternatives.
  • The thread does not definitively establish which balancing technique produces superior results for non-coplanar rigs.
