Practical tips and techniques for Steadicam operation and safety

12 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • Write character names, dialogue lines, and movement notes on white tape attached to your arm to keep track of shot requirements during filming.
  • Apply white tape to the first and last steps of stairs to distinguish them from other steps, which becomes increasingly important when moving quickly.
  • Use colored shrink wrap or electrical tape around cables for organization: yellow for video, red for general power, green for specific systems like reverse pins, blue for barrel connectors.
  • Attach a puck light to the bottom of the rig when shooting in dark areas or rough terrain at night to help read the ground without a spotter.
  • Secure a water bottle to your docking bracket using velcro on both the bottle and bracket so it stays accessible when docked without interfering with stand movement.
  • Wear cushioned, upbended shoe soles to ensure full foot support during extended Steadicam work.
  • Gaiters designed for mountain climbing provide waterproof arm protection that is easy to put on and remove while maintaining access to rig controls, and the inexpensive cylindrical style works better than expensive models with shoe-lace covers.
  • Elastic clip-on snow chains improve traction on icy surfaces like frozen lakes or slippery wet grass.
  • Use colored tape to mark areas where the rig should not travel, such as locations where it would hit lights, cause lens flares, create safety hazards, or fall into obstacles like orchestra pits.
  • Carry your own apple boxes in full and half sizes for use as seats, steps, booms, and height adjustments, and mark them clearly to prevent loss.
  • Glow-in-the-dark tape can mark spots in dark corners for resetting positions during live shows in total darkness; secure it with paper tape for better adhesion and refresh its glow with a light before use.

Depends on

  • Some tips are specific to particular shooting conditions like night shoots, live performances, or icy terrain.
  • The snow chain product model numbers mentioned may have limited regional availability.
  • Effectiveness of glow-in-the-dark tape depends on refreshing its luminescence periodically.
