Finding and eliminating minor vibrations in a Steadicam® sled, especially in low mode: systematic inspection procedure.
What the thread found
- Inspect every component individually for play: stage, battery hanger, batteries, and monitor; secure any loose parts with rubber bands or bongo ties, or temporarily brace everything with thin nylon cord to isolate the vibration source.
- The Betz DB2 stage is prone to vibrations; tighten the threaded spindles and set screws against the orange Delrin inserts, and check all screws connecting the stage to the post.
- The PRO-1-Post has six small screws at the top that loosen during transport; the connection between inner and outer post (the clamp engages only on one side) can also vibrate.
- Check the threads of the collars and the positioning pins between the post and upper and lower electronics boxes.
- Switching battery and CamJam stanchions from aluminum to titanium increases stiffness significantly; alternatively, replace only one stanchion to shift the resonance frequency.
- Always test vibrations with an actual camera rather than a practice cage, as weight distribution and balance change.
- The Noga arm and the G70X arm at the elbow area can strike themselves and introduce vibration; inspect these connection points.
Depends on
- Vibration sources and severity depend on rig configuration and actual camera weight and balance.
- Low-mode geometry changes inertial characteristics and can amplify certain resonances.
