Mounting an Arriflex 2C camera on a Steadicam with budget-friendly base plate alternatives
22 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Flatbase adapters for the 2C camera are available from multiple manufacturers including Arriflex, Cine 60, and CP, which move the motor from the handgrip side to the dummy side of the camera while reusing the existing motor.
- The Wolf-Sachtler high-hat solution for mounting a 2C is considered inferior to flatbase motor adapters.
- When using a high-hat adapter, the connection between camera and high-hat at the back of the camera can flex during movement, so additional webbing or strapping should be used to secure the camera tightly to prevent this.
- High-hat solutions require raising the camera significantly, which demands a higher pivot point for vertical balance and may induce vibration from the increased distance between camera and top stage.
- Used flatbase motors from CP and Cine 60 can be found on auction sites at low prices as alternatives to expensive new equipment.
- The threaded holes in a high-hat adapter base allow mounting to a tripod or sled plate.
Depends on
- This discussion focuses on early 2000s equipment availability and pricing.
- The claim about vibration from high camera placement on a sled is stated as a concern but not substantiated with testing data.
- No specifications provided for the exact weight of a loaded 2C with Cine 60 base.
- Budget mounting advice for the 2C on a Steadicam rig was requested but not fully addressed in the thread.
