Building a practice cage for mini DV cameras

22 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • A practice cage can be constructed using two pieces of square aluminum tubing filled with cement to create a weighted base, with dimensions around 45cm and 30cm lengths and 4mm thickness, weighing approximately 10kg.
  • The base plate should be positioned at the center of mass, drilled with proper holes, and threaded with 3/8 inch screws to attach a steadicam plate.
  • An alternative design uses two aluminum plates with steel struts between them, with the struts sized at 280mm length to accommodate compact cameras, adjustable weight by varying strut diameter.
  • The XL1 camera has a shallow 1/4-20 thread hole in its base that can be damaged if screw length is too long, potentially piercing the circuit board inside.
  • A practice cage can incorporate a camera mounting plate positioned above the base to simulate lens height of full-size cameras.
  • Diving weights can be attached or screwed into the top of a cage to increase total weight for practice.
  • Quality of materials matters significantly when building custom parts locally, as material defects could result in equipment failure and accidents.

Depends on

  • The XL1 camera limitation applies specifically to that model, though similar issues may occur with other cameras.
  • Suggested cage designs and weights are based on individual builder experience and may vary based on available materials and local construction capabilities.
  • Specific spacing distances for threaded mounting holes were requested but not fully resolved in the discussion.
  • The advice about material quality is general and not tied to specific suppliers or grades tested.
