360-degree roll on a gimbal head mounted on a vest: locking pan and tilt to maintain smooth rotation
What the thread found
- Locking the pendulum (tilt) mechanism at a position above or below the center of gravity, depending on camera weight, reduces the need for rebalancing during the move.
- Maintaining the optical axis as the true center of rotation during a continuous roll is technically difficult and typically requires multiple takes; productions should be forewarned.
- A Roll-Cage accessory manufactured by Movcam for the Trinity head enables continuous 360-degree roll without locking any axis, preserving jib and tilt movement simultaneously.
- The Movcam Roll-Cage works reliably with an ARRI ALEXA Mini and requires a raised platform for RED Komodo; it does not fit an ARRI ALEXA Mini LF because the memory card slot collides with the cage base plate.
- The Movcam Roll-Cage cost approximately USD 3,000 at the time and required 4 to 6 weeks lead time; availability has been sporadic.
- Wireless video transmission is the best option for monitoring during an endless roll because cable management becomes impractical.
Depends on
- Roll-Cage compatibility depends on camera model and lens centering.
- Lead time and availability of the Movcam Roll-Cage have been inconsistent.
