Eliminating vibration and play in the Zephyr camera crane top stage

13 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • Loose allen screws on the side-to-side adjustment dovetail mechanism can cause vibration in the top stage; tightening these screws while maintaining thumb screw mobility reduces movement.
  • Allen screws in the collar around where the post meets the sled can also contribute to vibration and should be tightened incrementally.
  • Play between the post and stage may originate from phillips screws inside the disassembled top stage that secure the stage to the post; these require disassembly to access.
  • Applying low-strength purple Loctite 222 to screws can help prevent them from loosening due to vibration.

Depends on

  • Initial problem resolution was not definitively confirmed in original post; multiple potential sources of vibration were identified and different users experienced slightly different symptoms.
  • The exact location and count of securing screws appears to vary or requires full disassembly to access.
  • Some users could feel vibration in the video feed before detecting it physically, suggesting the problem may manifest differently depending on observation method.
