Upgrading a ProVid steadicam rig to 24V power and HD monitoring capability
19 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- A ProVid rig can be modified to supply 24V power by connecting two batteries in series through an Anton Bauer mount, while the monitor continues receiving 12V from a single battery.
- The internal wiring of the telescopic post can be upgraded to handle HD video signals and higher power delivery.
- The arm-to-vest connector can be modified similarly to designs used on other rig models to support the weight of HD monitoring systems with follow focus accessories.
- A replacement vest sourced from Denmark-based vendors can be integrated into the modified rig.
- Marshall monitors with 400 nits brightness have been successfully field-tested on modified rigs with film cameras, follow focus systems, and LED lighting panels without operational issues.
- Higher brightness Marshall monitors around 1400 nits were announced as becoming available for outdoor use.
- The original half-moon bracket from the green screen monitor assembly can be repurposed to mount new LCD monitors using a standard 1/4-20 screw connection.
- Removing the original CRT monitor and replacing it with an LCD unit changes the rig's weight balance.
- Varizoom Lithium Ion batteries with 190 watt-hour capacity are available as a power option at approximately $500 USD each.
Depends on
- The modification was performed on a rig with an Anton Bauer mount; compatibility with other mount types is unclear.
- Field experience was limited to specific camera and lens combinations.
- One participant raised concerns about the engineering validity of connecting batteries with different watt-hour ratings in series, though this concern was not fully addressed.
- Monitor brightness limitations for outdoor shooting remained a consideration even with the 400 nits monitor.
- Long-term reliability data for the modified configuration was not discussed.
