Steadicam Zephyr rig specifications and physical characteristics
15 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The Zephyr arm weighs 9 pounds and the sled with SD monitor weighs 6 pounds 5 ounces without Merlin weights
- The sled length is adjustable from a minimum of 22.5 inches to a maximum of 36.5 inches
- The Zephyr arm has nearly identical outer dimensions to the first-generation Flyer arm, with the main differences being a 0.5-inch wider elbow and slightly heavier springs
- A Panasonic HPX500 with Canon kit zoom required one Hytron 50 counterweight and was balanced with the sled extended to 22 inches
- The arm post on the Zephyr is removable and can be replaced with a 10-inch extended post
- The vest features ratchet straps, a sturdier vertical spar, more rigid hip material, thicker pads compared to the Flyer vest, and adjustable shoulder clips using velcro straps
- Published specifications indicate a 30-pound arm lift capacity with a 24-pound payload limit, but the combined weight of sled and payload does not reconcile with these numbers
- The Zephyr monitor does not appear to have image flip capability and lacks documentation and remote control
Depends on
- Testing was limited due to a malfunctioning camera quick-release plate, preventing full arm tests
- No complete weight balancing or dynamic balance optimization was performed during initial testing
- Monitor specifications were not provided by the manufacturer at the time of testing
- Discrepancy between published arm lift capacity and payload limits remains unexplained and unresolved
- Individual arm units may have varying spring tensions and lift capabilities
- Testing was conducted with limited time available for comprehensive evaluation
