Video noise on Steadicam Pro II monitor caused by Canatrans interference
17 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Video noise on the monitor can result from the video signal being weakened by multiple devices drawing power or connected to the same video lines, such as recorders and the Canatrans, particularly without a video distribution amplifier installed.
- Installing a video distribution amplifier in the sled prevents video signal and noise from traveling in the wrong direction through the video lines and strengthens the signal to eliminate noise.
- Without a video distribution amplifier, all video ports on a Pro II function as both inputs and outputs, allowing interference to travel through the video chain.
- Stronger Canatrans power and gain settings correlate with increased interference and noise on the video signal.
- A video distribution amplifier installation resulted in elimination of visible video noise, improved brightness and image quality on both the monitor and wireless transmitter, and added an extra video output with professional installation taking approximately two days at a cost of around 325 dollars.
Depends on
- The original poster suspected the Canatrans but other potential sources of interference were discussed including camera battery power configuration, RF interference from wireless devices, and proximity of mobile phones.
- The solution was implemented by a specific technician and may depend on proper professional installation.
- The discussion involved multiple different camera rigs and monitor models which may have varying susceptibility to noise issues.
