Arm bending inward on hard-mounted steadicam rigs and solutions for positioning
18 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- When a hard-mount attachment point is positioned too far from the body, the arm can bend inward toward the body instead of outward
- Moving the hard-mount block attachment closer to the body prevents inward arm bending
- Flipping the hard-mount block orientation so knurled adjustment screws face toward the body instead of away provides better clearance and uses the torsion spring to bias the arm outward
- Removing the stopper from the arm block allows full outward rotation under spring tension and prevents inward buckling
- Using an inverted F-bracket with reversed yoke mounting post can restore arm reach when the mount position is adjusted backward for body clearance
- Hard-mount positioning slightly behind the hip reduces interference with right-side crossing motions while maintaining operational range
- Hard-mount positioning forward of the hip can interfere with crossing the rig in front of the body
- Intentional inward arm bending in tight spaces can reduce the rig profile by twisting the gimbal handle, though this is uncomfortable for extended periods
Depends on
- Solutions described are based on experimentation with specific rig configurations and may require adjustment for individual operator body types and specific camera setups
- Trade-offs exist between reach, body clearance, and operational maneuverability depending on hard-mount positioning
- Inward arm bending technique for tight spaces is not comfortable for sustained use
