2008Follow Focus forum
Attaching follow focus motors to old Zeiss high-speed lenses with PL-mount locking handles
18 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The Arri lightweight follow focus can be used on older Zeiss high-speed lenses because its smaller geared ring fits inside the PL-mount locking handles where a larger motor cannot be positioned
- A spacer (dog bone) with 15mm holes can extend a motor away from lightweight support rods, allowing it to be repositioned further back toward the lens gear
- One of the two screws holding a PL-mount locking handle can be removed to create additional clearance for a follow focus gear
- A free-drive gear can be used as an alternative solution
Depends on
- The solution applies specifically to Arri SR cameras with Mk1 Zeiss standard lenses featuring locking handles
- Some suggested solutions were not fully tested or confirmed in the thread
- The exact compatibility with different motor models and lens combinations was not comprehensively documented
