Operating Steadicam while shooting at high frame rates up to 240fps
12 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- High frame rate footage appears very smooth, making the operator look skilled regardless of technical ability.
- Focus becomes critical at high frame rates because a one-second focus error at 240fps becomes a ten-second error during playback, requiring marks, rehearsals, and deliberate pauses between moves rather than continuous operation.
- The FS700 camera compresses footage heavily at 240fps, potentially resulting in soft or out-of-focus images when recorded internally, though external recorders improve sharpness significantly.
- The FS700 records only 8-9 second bursts at 240fps, making record button timing difficult while operating Steadicam.
- Faster camera movements work better at extremely high frame rates than slow movements, and being further away helps with very fast footage.
- Keeping level is essential because any tilt or pan appears exaggerated for an extended duration when shot at high frame rates.
- An external recorder such as the Odyssey 7Q or R5 recorder substantially improves image quality compared to internal FS700 recording at high speeds.
- The FS700 supports LANC control, allowing wireless triggering via adapter cables from follow focus systems to eliminate wasted slow-motion footage.
- Steadicam remains useful at high frame rates for quick setup changes and angle adjustments, even though stationary camera positions might seem simpler.
Depends on
- Experiences and recommendations are specific to the FS700 camera.
- FS700 frame rate and burst limitations apply only to that model.
- Some operators found high-speed Steadicam unnecessary or questioned its value, indicating no universal agreement.
- Testing with the Ninja external recorder showed much better results than internal recording, but this was a specific rig combination.
- One operator's experience at 1000fps with speed ramps involved different creative choices than typical 240fps work.
