Choosing a steadicam rig for live television broadcast work
12 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
Note (as of October 2026)Curt O. Schaller, the developer of Artemis and Trinity, has no longer been with ARRI since the end of 2025. To our knowledge, ARRI currently has no dedicated team and no official contact persons for its stabilizer systems. In our view, the future of this line is uncertain. If you are buying new, get written confirmation from ARRI beforehand on how long service and spare parts are guaranteed. Have used rigs checked by the manufacturer before you buy.
What the thread found
- A Pilot rig can technically work for live TV with lightweight handheld cameras like the PMW-200, but it has significant practical limitations for broadcast.
- The Pilot's maximum payload of 10 pounds is too restrictive for most live TV work and leaves no room for expanding the rig configuration.
- The Pilot is more sensitive to operator error than larger rigs, making it riskier for live situations where reshoots are not possible.
- Larger rigs like the Archer2 or Zephyr offer better payload capacity, durability, and operational confidence for professional live broadcast.
- Live broadcast-specific rig models are typically designated with a -V suffix by manufacturers and come with features like tally integration and video return lines pre-installed.
- Rig selection should be based on the weight of the heaviest camera planned for use.
- Brands offering broadcast-capable steadicam rigs include Tiffen, Sachtler, and others like GPI and XCS.
- Trying out other operators' equipment is recommended before making a purchase decision to find what works best for individual needs.
Depends on
- The discussion includes a Facebook link reference to a specific broadcast performance that is no longer verified.
- Recommendations for alternative brands beyond Tiffen were limited in detail.
- The discussion does not address specific camera models' broadcast compatibility beyond general examples.
- No consensus on optimal rig for all live broadcast scenarios was reached.
