Choosing between cage and bracket systems for low mode on Steadicam rigs with video cameras
19 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Brackets provide better stability than cages by attaching the camera directly to the rig rather than offsetting the attachment point, which reduces leverage and minimizes vibration potential.
- Cages increase the height of the attachment point, creating additional leverage that can magnify or introduce shimmy if the camera is not wedged at the top of the cage.
- Cages are wider than the camera body itself, requiring extra care for clearance and are more prone to contact during movement in tight spaces.
- Not all brackets are compatible with all camera models, so operators may need camera-specific brackets or resort to flipping the rig in post-production if a suitable bracket is unavailable.
- Some bracket designs mount the plate to the camera chassis directly rather than relying on small handle screws, providing greater rigidity and reducing setup time.
- Camera rental houses typically stock brackets for various camera bodies, and many operators maintain their own collection of brackets for different cameras.
- Flipping the rig in post-production is a common and acceptable practice when a proper low mode bracket is not available or time-constrained.
Depends on
- Discussion focused on video cameras; film camera compatibility not discussed.
- Specific camera models mentioned only in questions about compatibility, not tested solutions.
- The thread is from 2007 and reflects equipment availability and practices of that era.
- No objective comparative testing data provided between different bracket designs.
