Choosing between Steadicam rigs for professional use with specific camera systems

17 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

Note (as of October 2026)Curt O. Schaller, the developer of Artemis and Trinity, has no longer been with ARRI since the end of 2025. To our knowledge, ARRI currently has no dedicated team and no official contact persons for its stabilizer systems. In our view, the future of this line is uncertain. If you are buying new, get written confirmation from ARRI beforehand on how long service and spare parts are guaranteed. Have used rigs checked by the manufacturer before you buy.

What the thread found

  • The Archer 2s rig offers a good balance of capability and price, with the ability to handle a wide range of camera weights while remaining compact for transport.
  • The LX vest and G50 arm combination provides good performance, though the LX vest lacks back-straps that can be added with velcro and buckles as a modification.
  • Professional Steadicam ownership involves substantial costs beyond the rig itself, including control systems, receivers, transmitters, carts, and backup parts that can easily exceed the initial equipment investment.
  • The Ultra vest provides benefits over the LX vest but at higher cost, and is compatible with multiple rig models for future upgrades.
  • Different manufacturers including PRO and XCS offer competitive alternatives with distinct advantages such as thinner-padded vests, smoother arm performance, or robust sled construction.
  • A tilting top stage on the sled is useful for frequent shot adjustments and can be considered a key feature worth prioritizing.
  • The G50 arm accepts various camera weights and allows tool-free adjustments for operating convenience.
  • Purchasing used or previously owned rigs can be a cost-effective alternative to new equipment while still meeting operational needs.
  • Component selection should prioritize personal operating style and comfort rather than purchasing complete pre-configured packages.

Depends on

  • The discussion focuses primarily on Tiffen-brand rigs; limited direct comparison data with competing brands is provided.
  • Camera system mentioned is the Panasonic HVX2100 with specific lenses, limiting applicability to other camera configurations.
  • Accessory costs cited are from a perspective of building extensive professional infrastructure and may not apply to all operating scales.
  • The easysteady system mentioned was not evaluated in detail by the forum participants.
