Quick-swap adapter solutions for Steadicam Flyer rig between aerial and tripod mounting
15 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The CatGriller accessory does not work with Steadicam Flyer dovetails.
- Using two Manfrotto QR 577 quick-release kits—one baseplate on the Flyer stage and one on the tripod—allows rapid camera swapping without reattaching dovetails.
- A custom aluminum adapter plate machined to match the dovetail angle can serve as a permanent stage mount on the tripod, enabling quick-swap capability without removing the dovetail from the rig.
- This approach costs under $100 for the Manfrotto solution and provides interchangeability across multiple cameras when each has its own baseplate.
Depends on
- No commercial CatGriller equivalent exists for Flyer or similar Steadicam dovetails.
- Custom adapter solutions require machining capability.
- The described workaround applies to the Flyer, Zephyr, and Archer dovetail systems specifically.
