First two-day workshop for absolute beginners: essential skills and equipment setup.
What the thread found
- The guide hand on the arm or grip should be as loose as necessary to accommodate walking steps, while the gimbal hand should be held like a butterfly—the slightest error and it flies away.
- The socket block must be trimmed so the rig floats freely while standing upright; raise the rig to the top of the boom range to understand what 'upright standing' means.
- With a well-balanced sled, beginners should release the gimbal hand to discover that poor movement comes from the hands, not the sled; then walk a line freehand while ensuring the socket block travels perfectly straight through space.
- Blind operation practice (unplugging the monitor BNC or turning off the monitor, recording, and reviewing) teaches operators to focus on essentials and prepares them for dust, splashes, or objects obstructing the monitor.
- Walking backward while navigating by markers or with guidance builds operator awareness.
- Operating at long focal lengths—for example 85 mm—to transition from movement into a minute-long static dialogue ('Steadicam®-tripod') and performing slow crawls over uneven ground develops finesse.
- On set, ACs may adjust monitor angles or deploy the ARRI ALEXA Mini LCD, destroying balance; secure with a Bongo Tie, and maintain composure and humor during troubleshooting (video or power failure, balance issues) as a core competency.
- Purchase batteries with the highest possible capacity; smaller batteries cost less but limit usability when high-capacity batteries fail; introduce Volt and Wave products only after hand-operated horizon control is mastered.
