Mounting a camera pointing upward on a Steadicam rig for fulldome filming

16 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • Neutral balance allows a Steadicam rig to maintain a tilted camera angle without continuous operator force, by adjusting the gimbal so the camera stays at whatever angle is set when released.
  • A tilt plate mounted on the Steadicam dovetail can angle the camera away from the rig body to keep the operator out of the shot when the rig is tilted forward.
  • A T-shaped bracket with the horizontal part attached to the dovetail and a long vertical section can raise the camera high above the operator's head while keeping the post at a forward angle.
  • For fulldome work with wide-angle lenses exceeding 180 degrees of view, raising the rig post or adjusting socket block height helps keep the operator and sled out of frame.
  • Small movements become magnified ten-fold when fulldome footage is projected onto a dome surface, making smooth operation critical.
  • Over-cranking the RED camera allows slower, smoother operator movement while maintaining the desired final playback speed, though 4K resolution locks the frame rate to 30 fps maximum.

Depends on

  • Solutions described are based on RED ONE camera, which is an older model from 2010.
  • Tilt plate solutions typically provide only 20-30 degrees of camera tilt, not the full 90 degrees needed for some fulldome venues.
  • Fulldome dome angles vary between zero and 30 degrees, requiring different configurations for different shooting locations.
  • A custom T-bracket requires machining and must be made from lightweight materials like aluminum, adding cost and complexity.
  • Raising the camera center of gravity requires lengthening the sled and adjusting arm tension and socket block position to maintain balance.
  • Techniques for neutral balance tilting require practice to master smooth operation.
