Reconnecting an RF antenna connector to a Preston MDR 3 circuit board for use in an MDR 2 unit
12 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The center pin of an SMA RF connector should be soldered to the center PCB land of the RF filter labeled FLT1, not to nearby adjacent lands.
- When soldering at 2.4 GHz frequencies, avoid overheating the trace and keep the solder joint small to prevent RF impedance mismatch that could reduce transmission range.
- FR4 fiberglass PCB material at 0.062 inches thickness performs adequately at 2.4 GHz frequencies for this application.
Depends on
- This procedure is specific to Preston MDR 3 boards being adapted for MDR 2 units.
- The guidance assumes standard SMA connector types and FR4 PCB construction.
- The original antenna mounting reference was lost, so the reconnection required visual inspection of a reference board.
